Howell High School (New Jersey)
Howell High School (HHS) is a four-year comprehensive public high school located in Howell Township, New Jersey, operating as part of the Freehold Regional High School District. The school serves all students from Farmingdale and those from some portions of Howell Township.[2] The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Secondary Schools since 1970.[3] Although located in Howell, the school is assigned a Farmingdale, New Jersey mailing address.
As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,487 students and 144 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 17.27.[1]
The school was the 174th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 322 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2010 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", after being ranked 159th in 2008 out of 316 schools.[4] The school was ranked 181st in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.[5]
General information
- The Howell High School mascot is the Rebel. He looks like Yosemite Sam with white hair and a blue uniform. (The mascot was selected due to the school's original name, "Southern Freehold Regional High School," which lasted until the district expanded to three schools in 1968.[6])
- Blue and gray are the school colors currently, although originally all schools in the district had blue and gold as the school colors at least until the late 1970s. This was originally done so the district could attempt to realize some cost savings on uniforms for extracurriculars.
- The Fine & Performing Arts Center (FPAC) is housed here.
- The Scholar's Center for the Humanities is housed here.
Programs
Howell High School is home to two of the district's specialized learning centers. Students in eighth grade from any of the seven municipalities may apply. The FPAC program consists of actors, dancers, and entertainment technology students. Students work for 4 years to hone their skills in one of these three aspects. Although many students of the FPAC program work in the Drama Club, it is open to any student of Howell High School. The Humanities Program consists of a wide variety of students, who take part in advanced classes on history, art, literature, computer applications and philosophy. Their history class, English class and elective are exclusively for Humanities students.
Athletics
Howell High School competes in the Shore Conference, an athletic conference made up of private and public high schools centered at the Northern Jersey Shore.[7] All schools in this conference are located within Monmouth County and Ocean County. The league operates under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.[8]
The 2007 football team won the Central Jersey, Group IV state sectional championship with a 46-13 win over West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South in a game played at Rutgers Stadium. The win was the first sectional title in team history.[9][10]
The 2008 Varsity Golf team defeated Christian Brothers Academy for the first time in school history and won its first ever Freehold Regional District title with a team score of 307. With a final record of 17-2, Howell earned the Public A-North title and tied with CBA for Outright A-North champion. Howell also qualified for the Group IV State Sectional tournament and narrowly missed their first opportunity to attend the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions when they placed third by only one stroke. The 2009 team beat CBA both home and away and won its first Shore Conference crown in boys golf. Despite finishing in fourth place in the state sectional tournament, the team won the FRHSD championship by a 15-stroke margin.

Other high schools in the district
Attendance at each of the district's six schools is based on where the student lives in relation to the high school closest to the student. Each year, district lines are redrawn for each of the six schools to reduce issues with overcrowding and spending in regards to transportation. Schools in the district (with 2009-10 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics[12]) with their attendance zones for the class entering for the 2009-10 school year are:[2]
